Platter Albrecht and Isabella

1601 - 1601

A relief medallion with the effigies of the archdukes Albrecht and Isabella facing each other decorates the raised well in the middle. The archdukes are shown in profile under an open crown and can be identified from the legend "ALBERTVS.ET.ELISABET.DEI.GRATIA". Where the effigy ends, the year 1601. A larger plate with identical medallion made by the Antwerp pewterer Andries I de Mangeleer and originally from the lay brothers' monastery in Diest, is now in Diest Municipal Museum. The Musée Archéologique in Namur has a pewter medallion, which was apparently cut from a similar plate. The same pewter medallion with the year 1610 is found in the Coin and Medal Room in Brussels. A coat of arms is stamped on the border of this plate at the top: a fess and above three martlets to the left; underneath a battle-axe. Above this coat of arms are the initials CVR.
