What will you do?

Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience making silverware, the open workshop silversmithing has something for all levels.

As a beginner, you will master basic silversmithing techniques during the open workshop. You will learn to saw, file, sand, polish, forge and use various tools to manipulate sheet or wire metal into different shapes. Under guidance, you will learn how to forge a bowl or a spoon.

For advanced students, the workshop focuses on more complex projects and techniques. You will receive tailored guidance on designing and finishing your own ideas.

With experienced guidance and access to a range of tools and materials, participants can explore their creativity and take their skills to the next level.

Practical information

  • Please note! Silver is not included. As every design is different, each participant provides their own silver.

  • If necessary, DIVA can advise you about purchasing your silver prior to the open workshop.

  • Beginners coming to forge a silver bowl or spoon can purchase silver from the museum. DIVA has a limited stock.

Workshop facilitator

Silversmith Max Gielis will guide you from concept to finished object. A combination of demonstrations, one-to-one guidance and creative problem-solving are the ingredients of the open workshop.

Max studied silversmithing at Sint-Lucas Antwerp and worked as an independent silversmith on commission for Gijs Bakker, Koen Wijngaerden and atelier Lachaert D'Hanis, among others. He is currently a lecturer at the RHoK Academy in Brussels.
