Necklace with etui
1900 - 1910
This intricate necklace is set with numerous diamonds. It would have adorned the décolletage of a lady attending a stylish evening event dressed in a light, flowing gown. The bows, garlands and trophies were typical motifs of the last half of the eighteenth century and were revived at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the same period jewels made of platinum began to take over from a laminate of silver on gold. Platinum is more malleable and stronger than silver or gold, allowing the craftsman to execute finer designs. The delicate structure of these ‘garland-style’ jewels is typical of the belle époque (end nineteenth century up to WW1).
