Snuffbox with miniature portrait of king Leopold II
ca. 1850 - ca. 1900
Snuffboxes were popular and prestigious official-type gifts in royal circles. Even once snuff-taking had gone out of fashion in the nineteenth century, the boxes were still a sign of affluence and standing. The lid of this one features a miniature portrait of King Leopold II. Research has revealed that the maker based it on a portrait photograph of the king.
