DIVA is inviting jewellery designers, silver- and goldsmiths to take part in the Artist in Residence programme at DIVA Atelier in Antwerp. Here, residents are given time, space and professional support to research and experiment within their field.
For the first residency period of 2022, DIVA selected Mara Balode and Lingjie Wang. They will talk to DIVA and tell more about their work, the process and the final result of the residency.
Who?
Mara Balode is a jewellery designer who lives and works in Antwerp. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including the US, Japan, Italy and the Netherlands. During her BA at the Glasgow School of Art, she completed an exchange program at the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelery in Tokyo. There she became fascinated by transparent materials and themes around light and illusion. Her research involves exploring and developing aspects such as reflection, color and time. In this way she wants to 'hold' the light within her jewellery.
Lingjie Wang lives and works in Shanghai, China. In her jewellery she investigates the relationship between material, form and concept. Every culture has a different preference when it comes to gemstones, for example. In the East people attach much more value to a gemstone like jade, while in the West they are more likely to opt for diamonds. How materials are defined and processed and what cultural implications are attached to this are the subject of research in her work.
