Vase Biophilia Ephemeral Vase
2022 - 2022
Fifth Prize (Heimerle + Meule silver prize)
Kazuhiro Toyama (°1994) is a Japanese metalworker and one of the youngest participants in the Silver Triennial. He created a most unusual silver vase, using thermal spraying technology to apply layers of metal to the surface. This exposed cracks and threatened the stability of the vase. The organic texture created in this way is suggestive of the rough forms of metals like ore. The jury interpreted this novel approach to silver design as alluding to the fragility of society, which is also full of cracks and in danger of being destabilized by an unexpected event.
