Collapsible 'spring-into-position' guinea scales
1790 - 1820
English scales such as these were used from the end of the eighteenth century to weigh whole or half golden guineas. They were very popular in England and France. The name spring-into-position was given to these scales because when opened, the weighing instrument springs open ready for use.
