We can assume from the size of this jug that it was used for storing wine or other liquids. It was closed with a wooden, stone or cork stopper. Cork from the cork oak from Spain and Portugal was imported into Northern Europe from the seventeenth century onwards. A figure 4 is stamped on the body of the jug.
