Inkstand
1837
The inkstand is constructed like a classical monument with a chased and embossed representation on each of the four sides of the socle: a crowned sword, a statute book with sceptre and twice a pair of scales. The symbolism of this - in combination with the cock on the lid - is perhaps to be found in the representation of the Three Powers (legislative, judicial and executive) under the umbrella of Vigilance. The square base conceals a secret sliding drawer. An inkpot is concealed in the socle and the urn on top serves as a pounce-pot. Inscriptions were scratched onto the bottom: 'R. Habay 28-9-34' and 'De Hart 17-4-1959', possibly the names of previous owners.
