Stand

1750 - 1785

The small oval basket and stand are decorated with glass threads nipped into an openwork mesh pattern, giving the appearance of open basketwork, a very labour-intensive technique. Baskets of this sort were produced in Liège by Jacques Nizet (1662-1732) or his nephew Denis I Nizet (1708-1784), as well as in Namur in the factory of Sébastien Zoude (1707-1779). These baskets are illustrated in Sébastien Zoude's production catalogue handwritten in 1762 and now in the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning (New York State). They were used to present fruit or sweetmeats on the table.
