1870

Born in Malines, Charles Jacques Corneille Buls (1806-1878) was joaillier, bijoutier, orfèvre at No.35 Marché aux Herbes in Brussels. His maker's mark appears in the Dutch period (1815-1832) and the first Belgian period (1832-1869) and consisted of two crossed branches under the letter B. His son Charles Gommaire Buls (1837-1914), who also trained as a silversmith, was burgomaster of Brussels from 1881 to 1899. This advertising card may have been made by Xavier van Marcke who was based on the Place St Lambert no. 18 in Liège around 1870.
