Jozef Roettiers (1635-1703) belonged to a large Antwerp family of coin and medal engravers. He began his career as a medallist at the mint in Antwerp. After a spell in England, he was invited by the French minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683) to succeed François Varin at the Paris mint. He was also engraver-general of the French coins. His oeuvre consists mainly of historical medals illustrating the feats of King Louis XIV of France.
