In 1835 the New York paper the ‘Sun’ published a series of reports about the English astronomer Sir John Herschel who had studied the moon with his telescope and discovered poppies, deep-blue water, moon bisons, goats with one horn and even bat-like humanoids. It triggered a great fascination with this celestial body. Pearls were often incorporated into jewels because they called to mind the moon.
