In the nineteenth century you gave a lock of hair to your loved ones as a sign of affection. These locks were then often plaited and made into hair jewelry. This was usually done by professional hair-workers, but there were also instructions for doing it yourself, as found for example in an issue of Penelope magazine dating from 1822. This gold ring contains plaited strands of hair. The inscription “souvenier de mon frère” tells us it is a keepsake of a brother.
