Sadeler, Johan

1550 - 1601

Also called Hans Sadeler. The engraver was active in the Sint-Lucas Guild of Antwerp before 1572 and was a master in the guild. He got his apprenticeship from his father where he was trained to engrave iron. Between 1578 and 1579 he moved to Cologne with his brother Raphael I (1561 - 1632) because of religious disputes. In 1785, he traveled to Frankfurt, Mainz, Munich, and Prague until 1595, when he decides to travel south. He went to Italy and travels to Verona, Venice, and Rome. He develops a more liberal style and publishes many prints. He dies ca. 1601 in Venice. Presumably, he died of the plague. His Son, Justus Sadeler (1572 - 1620), was also an engraver but didn't publish as many prints as his father.
