Mars platter

1600

This type of Mars plate was made after the work of Caspar Enderlein (1560-1633) and François Briot (?) (c.1550-after 1616). The allegories Pax, Bellum, Abundantia and Invidia, as well as the central medallion depicting the god Mars and the four world rulers Ninus, Cyrus, Alexander Magnus and Caesar were inspired by prints by Etienne Delaune (1520-1590). The representation of the four parts of the world draws on a series of prints by Jan Sadeler the Elder (1550-1600) after Dirk Barendsz (1534-1592). Similar plates are preserved in (among other places) the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Frankfurt, the Maximilians Museum in Augsburg and the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels.
