Briot, François

1550 - 1620

Engraver and Medallist who was working in Damblain and Montbéliard, France, between 1565 and 1616. There are no records of him to be found after 1616. In the period in which he worked, he was a well-known artist. In 1580 he settled in Montbéliard, probably because of religious conflicts. In 1585 he became the titular engraver of count Frederik van Württemberg. From ca. 1593 on, things didn't go well for him and he was in financial trouble and there were different debt lawsuits. From 1616 on, there is no trace of him. The last time he was mentioned, he had to sell his furniture and moulds in order to pay the creditors.
