Barendsz, Theodoor Bernard (Dirk)

1534 - 1592

Painter and drawer from Amsterdam, he went into apprentice in the workshop of his fathers, Dircksz Barend. In 1555, at age 21, he went to Italy, to work in the workshop of Titian in Venice. He came back to Amsterdam in 1561. Barendsz was described by Karel Van Mander as a skilled portraitist who excelled in religious genre art. Aside from painting, Barendsz was also interested in music and poetry, he played instruments and had contacts with the poet Lampsonius. He passed away in Amsterdam in 1592, apparently, while painting.
