Bos, Cornelis

1506 - 1555/05

Dutch engraver and printmaker, born between 1506 - 1510 as the son of Willem Bos. Between 1530 and 1538, he was probably active in Rome as a student of Marcantonio Raimondi (1480 - 1534). He then moved to Antwerp and became a citizen on April 1, 1540. That same year he also became a member of the guild. Because he was accused of being a member of the 'Loisten' sect, he was expelled from the city in 1544. He went to Paris and sought protection in Nuremberg from 1546 to 1548. Here he would publish a lot of prints. After his stay in Nuremberg, he probably moved to Haarlem, where he probably worked with Maarten van Heemskercke (1498 - 1574), Jan van Scorel (1495 - 1562), and Dirck Volkertsz.Coornhert (1522 - 1590). He may have traveled back to Rome in 1548, where he was active as an engraver. He then moved to Groningen, where he became a burgher in 1550. Here he married for a second time. He dies in Groningen in May 1555.
