Relief medaillon with the forge of Vulcan

1570 - 1580

It would appear from the large number of examples of this plaquette still in existence that the mythological theme of Vulcan's forge was very popular in the sixteenth century. The representation is copied from a print by Cornelis Bos (1506-1556) dating from 1546, engraved after a painting Maarten van heemskerck (1498-1574) made for Haarlem town hall in 1536. This painting is now in the National Gallery in Prague. (Source: The Sterckshof Collection, 2003)
