Zwollo, Frans

This silversmith and jeweler was born on the 4th of April 1872 in Amsterdam. He was the son of silversmith Johannes Zwollo (1835-1891) and Johanna Francisca Clara Meijer. He was a student at the Drawing school of crafts between 1886 and 1888 and got educated by Professor Ludwig Jonger (1856 - 1906). He also followed coursed at the Arts and crafts school Quellinus in Amsterdam, and in 1892 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He settled as a silversmith in Amsterdam in 1894. By the end of the century, his business was profitable. In September 1897 Zwollo was the artistic director at the metal department in the Arts and crafts school in Haarlem. Throughout his life, he taught at other craft institutes, like the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hagen, the Academy of visual arts in Den Haag, ect. In 1900 he sent an art piece to the World fair in Paris and got a Bronze medal. Aside from this, he got success on exhibitions for decorative arts throughout Europe. He past away in 1945 in Amstelveen. Frans Zwollo was an important Dutch personality who had a lot of influence on silversmithing. His son Frans Zwollo jr. (1896 - 1989) also enjoyed great success.
