De Porceleyne Bijl

The Porceleyne Bijl was an earthenware bakery founded in 1657 by Adriaan van Houten and Jacob Wemmersz. Hoppesteyn, whose shares were purchased the very first year by Benedictus van Houten (son of Adriaan van Houten). The Bakery was located on the Gasthuislaan, in the southern part of Delft. In the following years, shares were often sold and changed owners but from 1668 to 1803, the business was always in the hands of one family. The objects manufactured by the factory were sold all over Western Europe. In 1739, the factory came into the hands of Justus Brouwer, then twenty years old. After his death in 1775, the bakery was kept open by his widow Anna Christina van Oorden until her death in 1785. During this period, the factory produced mainly white and blue porcelain with Kangxi decoration. Hugo Brouwer, son of Justus Brouwer and Christina van Oorden, took over the business until 1790 and played an important role in producing faience. He maintained a folksier, more decorative style. After Hugo sold the bakery, the factory changed hands several more times until De Porceleyne Bijl closed its doors for good in 1803.
