Den Salm

In 1520, Italian Guido de Savino (also called Guido Andries) started a majolica bakery in Antwerp together with Jan Frans. He settled in the house 'Den Salm' (today's Kammenstraat no 32). When Guido died in 1531, Jan Frans' son Franchois Frans took over the business. Franchois married Anna van Dueren, Guido Andries' widow, and Den Salm remained in his possession until 1562. Guido Andries' six sons were also active in the pottery. The eldest son, Lucas Andries, took over Den Salm in 1562. The business subsequently came into the hands of Willem van Brecht, who had married t Gheertruydt Snoeye, the widow of Lucas Andries, in 1573. In 1615, Lambert Collegie leased Den Salm for five and a half years. After his death in 1621, Willem van Brecht left no descendants, marking the end of the atelier.
