ibens, Wim

Belgian silversmith. Wim Ibens was born on the 4th of May 1934 in Antwerp. He was trained at the Technische Kunstambachtschool in Berchem and the Instituut voor Kunsten en Ambachten in Brussels. He studied under Arthur Dupon, Henri Puvrez and Marc Macken at the Koninklijke Academie and the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. Became a trainee in several workshops where he studied goldsmith and silversmith arts, platinum and diamond jewels, chasing and copper embossing, sculpturing and moulding. In 1961 and 1963 he won respectively the provincial award for applied arts, section monumental art and section religious art. He set up his workshop in Borgerhout (1960-1965) and afterwards in Wuustwezel (1968- ). One of his most important commissions was the restoration of the shrine of Ste.-Gertrudis in Nijvel (Nivelles). Till 1966 he taught goldsmith and silversmith arts at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (The Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Antwerp.
