Debucourt, Louis Philibert

Philipbert Louis Debucourt was a French painter and engraver. He was born in Paris on the 13th of February 1755. At the age of nineteen, in 1774, he studied at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris. Here he was taught, among others, by Joseph-Marie Vien (1716 - 1809). In 1781, 1783, and 1785 he participated in the Salons; in 1786 he became a full member of the Académie royale. At the beginning of his career, he focused mainly on painting but later he was mainly active as an engraver. Rather, he worked in aquatint and engraved after painters such as Rembrandt and Rubens. Debucourt also produced multicolor prints where he combined aquatint with line engravings. He was also a talented caricaturist and sometimes produced satirical prints. He died on the 22nd of September 1832 in Belleville.
