Goldsmith Léopold van Strydonck regarded this jewel as his absolute masterpiece, which is why he never sold it. After his death the piece remained in the family until the 1980s. He liked to incorporate plant motifs into his jewels such as sprigs of mistletoe and orchids. For this design he chose the staghorn fern.
