Chatelaine

1800 - 1900

Though a fascinating accessory, the chatelaine went out of use at the end of the nineteenth century. A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. In the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries all kinds of useful objects were attached to the chains so as to have them close to hand. They were worn by both men and women, though the objects differed. A man’s chatelaine was often hung with seals and clock keys, as is the case here.
