1819/08/16 - 1838/05/09

The jewellery on the pincushion was collected between 1835 and 1996 by 3 generations of the jewellery family Philippen from Diest. The family can be traced back to Leonardus Philippen (°08/03/1808 in Sittard - †), who married Catharina Le Haen (°07/10/1805 in Sittard - †) on 1 October 1831. Their son Jozef Philippen (°25/08/1845 in Maaseik - †15/05/1926) was the first documented goldsmith of the family. The trade was then passed on to one of their five children, Polydoor (°18/07/1882 - †). On the 10th of May 1909 Polydoor married Maria Carolina Janssens (°26/08/1878 in Bekkevoort - †). Their son, Jos Philippen (°14/05/1912 - †04/08/1996), was also a jeweller by profession, but he acquired more fame as a publicist, publisher and historian. After the death of Jos, the collection of jewels remained untouched.
