Luis de Requesens commemorative medal
1576
Obverse: bust facing left of Luis de Requesens and 'LVDVICVS RICASENIVS MAJOR CASTILLIE COMENDATARIVS'. Reverse: a sea-battle and 'FORTITVDINE AC CONSILIO' (Through courage and leadership). See G. Van Loon, Beschrijving der Nederlandsche Historiepenningen, 1, The Hague, 1723, p. 216. Luis de Requesens (1528-1576) succeeded the Duke of Alva as governor of the Netherlands. The legend refers to his title of Great Commander of Castile. The reverse is probably a reference to the rescue of his fleet off the coast of Majorca. Almost nothing is known about the medallist Anieus; he is assumed to have worked in the Netherlands.
