Art Nouveau comb

1890 - 1910

This art-nouveau comb was influenced by the Japanese style. The devotion to Japanese things known as ‘japonism’ began to emerge in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century as a result of renewed contacts with the country. In the East the Crane symbolized defence, but in the West it was more a sign of mildness. The undulating whiplash line in the wings of the animals is a typical art-nouveau motif.
