The crescent moon is the symbol of Diana, the goddess of hunting. Empress Eugenie of France, a real fashion trendsetter whose taste was much admired and copied, made the motif popular in the nineteenth century by organizing outings to her country seat where hunting was one of the main activities. The crescent moon is also a marriage symbol, for the month following the marriage should be the sweetest.
